Mother and Child Health

Pakistan ranks behind most developing countries in the reproductive health risk index. Pakistan has one of the lowest records in female health and education and its fertility rate of 4.00 and population growth rate of 1.9 is considerably higher than other Asian countries. Some 30,000 women die each year due to complications of pregnancy, and 10 times more women develop life-long, pregnancy-related disability. Rural women's health is generally poorest due to the lack of health facilities and skilled health providers. One of the main reasons for this despicable status of women’s health status is that they are subjugated to perpetual and frequent pregnancies without any consideration for their health. WELDO is working on several projects in order to ameliorate the health of mother and child in Pakistan.

Birth Spacing
During the 1990s, a series of important United Nations conferences emphasized human rights central to all development and reproductive rights as a cornerstone of development. Reproductive rights were clarified and endorsed internationally in the Cairo Consensus that emerged from the 1994 International Conference on Population and Development. This constellation of rights, embracing fundamental human rights established by earlier treaties, was reaffirmed at the Beijing Conference and various international and regional agreements since, as well as in many national laws. They include the right to decide the number, timing and spacing of children. The right to decide the number, timing and spacing of children is very important at they are pivotal to the health of mother and child.

WELDO is working on a number of initiatives to promote the right for birth spacing for women in the rural areas of Punjab where the situation of women is most precarious. with reference to their sexual and reproductive rights.

Midwives

Although the situation of health facilities for a majority of population is in a sorry state but the condition of mother and child health is deplorable. The Government has made credible efforts during the past decade for amelioration of mother and child health but the approach has not been able to lower the incidence of mother and child mortality. The main reason for this is that instead of utilizing and enhancing the vast potential of midwives in Pakistan the government projects have focused on introducing new health workers thereby straining the already meager health budget. WELDO is therefore working on promotion of midwives as inexpensive quality health care providers for perinatal, prenatal and postnatal health care. In this regard currently WELDO is working on several capacity building and research projects.
