Immigration

Illegal immigration and human trafficking are one of the most dire problems facing Pakistan today. Several villages in Pakistan have been known to be the source of illegal immigration from which thousands of people have been migrating since the 1960s. The plight of these illegal immigrants who live abroad is what drives us to work for their welfare. The illegal immigrants have to work abroad on lesser wages, live in cardboard boxes, eat from the trash cans, they even let their children be grown up in the same circumstances, live in constant fear of being caught, not having access to health facilities etc. WELDO is working upon changing the mindset of people regarding illegal migration. There is a common perception in Pakistan that moving abroad can provide unprecedented income earning opportunities while they are completely oblivious of the problems that illegal immigrants have to face.

Even the youth and children in certain areas in Pakistan are of the opinion that education is not necessary since they will be immigrating abroad through illegal means. Therefore the evil of illegal immigration is also causing an increase in the rate of school dropouts in these specific areas. WELDO undertakes the following interventions in order to curb the evil of illegal immigration and human trafficking.

Research

Research is the basic tool that enables us to reach the root cause of an issue and help us in controlling the situation in an informed and pragmatic manner. Therefore WELDO carries out research on a number of issues related to illegal immigration throughout Pakistan so as to better understand the root cause and determinants of illegal immigration.

Direct Interventions

From time to time WELDO carries out advocacy and seminars to inform the masses about the evils of illegal immigration. Such seminars and advocacy campaigns are held in the areas where there is a higher concentration of families of illegal immigrants.

Working with Children and Youth

Children and youth are the most effected from the demonstration effect that is caused by illegal immigrants. They try to follow their role models (illegal immigrants) who are not educated, go abroad through illegal means and send money to add income to their families. Little do these children and youth know that the life that these illegal immigrants live in foreign countries is not worth all the trouble they undergo. The children and youth also form an opinion that education is not important since they will be migrating illegaly to foreign lands and even then find themselves income earning opportunities.

Therefore WELDO is working with school children and youth in specific areas to change this mind set and also to inculcate to the children and youth that education is important for career building and for personal grooming. Furthermore if they are really aspiring to go abroad they should opt to do so through legal and proper channels.

Tobacco Control Research

GENDER BASED ANALYSIS OF SELECTED TOBACCO CONTROL POLICY INITIATIVES IN PAKISTAN

Gender Based Analysis of Selected Tobacco Run Programs in Pakistan is an International Development Research Center's (IDRC) funded research project. This project is aimed at controlling the high rate increase in the number of female smokers in Pakistan. The project intends to achieve this through carrying out gender based analysis of tobacco control programs, identifying gaps in them and compiling a framework for effective tobacco control programs that cater to the needs of both genders. In this regard we require your input. So whether you are a research institute, a university, an organization or a hospital working on tobacco control programs come ahead with your support and send your publications to us.
