Governance

Pakistan is a highly populated country with a population of over 172 million people. One of the major issues hindering development, peace and security in Pakistan is a very weak democratic structure of the country. In over half a century since Pakistan's independence it has seen many failed short term democracies and a long string of military governments. In order to support the building of a strong democratic structure of Pakistan WELDO has embarked upon many initiatives for the year 2010 onwards.

Women as Leaders of Tomorrow and Today

WLLT is a multiyear initiative by WELDO which is aimed a capacitating the young women of today with leadership knowledge for becoming leaders for tomorrow. Women in politics in Pakistan have been bearing the brunt of gender discrimination in all forms in their rise as political leaders. Those who do decide to realize their potential as political leaders find it hard to identify how to streamline themselves in the political process in order to lead the development process. For this reason WELDO will carryout multiyear trainings for women to build their roles as political leaders. Such trainings will be carried out twice a year and are expected to bring a cadre of strong women leaders in the political scenario of Pakistan democracy.

Youth as leaders of Today and Tomorrow

YLTT is a multiyear development initiative that will aim at building the leadership capacity of youth to streamline their participation in the democratic and policy making processes in Pakistan. Youth can become the leaders of today and tomorrow but they are often subject to manipulation by the political classes, and have engaged in violent action at various politically sensitive movements in recent history. WELDO under this project in a series of capacity building initiatives will equip the youth all over Pakistan with leadership skills, civic education and practical training to engage them in an empowered civic role as responsible citizens.

Youth Community Development Program

YCDP is a multiyear innovative initiative by WELDO under which it will build the capacity of youth for identifying, designing and implementing youth headed community development programs. The youth will also be responsible for raising 70% of the project costs for such initiatives. This initiative will build the capacity of youth in dealing with the developmental problems of their communities head on and provide solutions to solve these problems.

Mentor-Mentee Program

The role of mentors in Pakistan have never been realized. The political leaders fail to initiate processes in which they can play their part as role models for tomorrows leaders and build their future as mentors. The MMP program by WELDO will aim at sensitizing the political leaders in realizing their roles as mentors and will help facilitate the mentor-mentee relationship between political leaders and youth.

Tobacco Control Research

GENDER BASED ANALYSIS OF SELECTED TOBACCO CONTROL POLICY INITIATIVES IN PAKISTAN

Gender Based Analysis of Selected Tobacco Run Programs in Pakistan is an International Development Research Center's (IDRC) funded research project. This project is aimed at controlling the high rate increase in the number of female smokers in Pakistan. The project intends to achieve this through carrying out gender based analysis of tobacco control programs, identifying gaps in them and compiling a framework for effective tobacco control programs that cater to the needs of both genders. In this regard we require your input. So whether you are a research institute, a university, an organization or a hospital working on tobacco control programs come ahead with your support and send your publications to us.
