Food Security

Food security was defined in 1996 at the World Food Summit as "When all people at all times have access to sufficient, safe, nutritious food to maintain a healthy and active life". For Pakistan which is a predominantly agricultural economy the food should not be a problem but due to the recent security situation, problems in the food supply chain, lack of technological input for expanding agricultural production, unavailability of fertilizer, lack of support for local agro-mechanical technologies, drying up rivers, rapid urbanization, lack of assistance to small hold farmers and climate change, food for the common people is becoming scarce and it is becoming expensive for the rest of the population. According to the

Research

Research in food security issues is one of the main areas of intervention for handling the dwindling problem of food security for Pakistan. Under this initiative WELDO has started working on several research projects to boost support for locally produced machineries and latest technology transfer to increase the agricultural produce per hectare for Pakistan. In this regard WELDO is working with several prominent institutes from all across the world.

 Strengthening Women's Land Ownership Rights

Although women produce about 60-80% of the world's food yet they own only a little over 1% of land. Denying women land and income rights only adds to the perpetuating poverty per household. Realizing this critical issue WELDO has embarked upon several programs aimed at securing women's right to own land. In the backdrop of stringent cultural and social norms in Pakistan where women can not only be denied land but can be murdered under the pretence of "honor" for demanding their own land this issue is quite an uphill task. Under this area of focus WELDO has initiated several projects ranging from advocacy to facilitation of land ownership to women all across Pakistan.

Direct Intervention

WELDO in partnership with several organizations across the world has initiated several projects for boosting food security in Pakistan. Under this focus area we have already started projects that make use of direct intervention methods for increasing the per hectare yield of staple food crops in Pakistan.

Tobacco Control Research

GENDER BASED ANALYSIS OF SELECTED TOBACCO CONTROL POLICY INITIATIVES IN PAKISTAN

Gender Based Analysis of Selected Tobacco Run Programs in Pakistan is an International Development Research Center's (IDRC) funded research project. This project is aimed at controlling the high rate increase in the number of female smokers in Pakistan. The project intends to achieve this through carrying out gender based analysis of tobacco control programs, identifying gaps in them and compiling a framework for effective tobacco control programs that cater to the needs of both genders. In this regard we require your input. So whether you are a research institute, a university, an organization or a hospital working on tobacco control programs come ahead with your support and send your publications to us.
