  Environment

Environmental Rehabilitation and Conservation is one of the focus areas of WELDO. Under this focus areas WELDO is working on the following:-

 Climate Change

Climate change is now recognized as one of the greatest environmental, social and economic threats facing our globe. Climate change will likely result in reduced diversity of ecosystems and the extinction of many species. Pakistan has already started bearing the brunt of climate change as most of its rivers are drying up. The resultant effect of which is disappearing ecosystems, drought and unavailability of water for irrigation.

Renewable Energy
Promotion, supply and operation of renewable energy technology (specially in the villages of Pakistan where more than 70% of the population resides) is a program that comes under “Tackling the Climate Change” program of WELDO. Under this project WELDO recently provided capacity building training to local farmers in five locations in Punjab in management, operation and up-keeping of solar panels for use in peter engine water motors.

Afforestation
Afforestation is a very important tool that can help control and reverse the issue of climate change. Forests not only act as carbon sinks but also are act as a habitat of millions of plant and animal species. Recognizing the importance of afforestation WELDO undertakes afforestation campaign twice a year through out the area of Islamabad and related villages.

Awareness Raising
Awareness raising on climate change issues can achieve multiple goals as the majority of population of Pakistan unknowingly indulges in activities that become the cause of discharge of toxic fumes in the air and release of effluents in the precious water arteries that sustain life in Pakistan.
Thus WELDO has initiated a “Citizens Who Care” campaign to raise awareness about the use of toxic fuels in industries, homes, villages and other manufacturing concerns so that their usage can be reduced and stopped.

Energy

Energy has become one of the basic need for development. The need is more vital now than it was a decade ago with the booming world population and industrial development.

Energy Programs

WELDO is currently working with scientific institutions in Italy on innovative energy projects that involve technological transfer as well as research on the following in Pakistan:-

  • Co-Generation

  • Methane Sequestration through landfills

  • Conservation of energy through Earth Energy in cooling and warming homes

  • Energy conservation through innovative house building techniques

In Pakistan WELDO is also working in partnership with organizations from Pakistan on a project to implement solar power in villages in Punjab and Sindh for irrigating farms  and also for providing electricity to homes in villages.

Future: -

In near future WELDO will start working on projects that will introduce technologies that will aim at introducing and implementing Ethanol as a second fuel in Pakistan.

New Initiatives

WELDO is always open to new ideas for implementation of its developmental initiatives. So if your organization is interested in working with us on any field of environment  that is not mentioned here please talk to us, we would be very interested in exploring new opportunities of collaboration and environmental rehabilitation and conservation.
